As you can see from the massive pile of debris, these Connecticut folks were really hard workers! But many of them were far beyond that. They had a heart for God and were a pleasure to spend time with. They were a perfect end to our busy summer. I am going to miss the teams.
The last few teams of the summer have now come and gone, our two volunteers have left. I took my leaders to the airport yesterday morning to leave for their vacation. So yeah, I am all alone on the base with a 'to do' list which consist of tiling a kitchen, two bathrooms, and fixing wheel barrows, which should keep me busy until I head to Texas to visit family and then to Toledo, Ohio (Lord willing) to visit friends.
A small team from Las Vegas served for a week. I had some wonderful conversations with them. They were all together great. A couple on the team introduced me to my new favorite childrens book titled "Hope for the flowers".  A book worth its weight in gold. You got to read it!!!
"The Wall"
Almost every team has gone to "The Wall". The team from Seattle went almost every night. The Wall is where 7 days a week, a different church, ministry or org. feeds the homeless and needy outside of the French Quarter. Sometimes almost 200 people wait in a line in order to get a quality plate of hot food. This gives the teams I take there an opportunity to strike up a conversation. Most everyone ends up having some really meaningful time, so many people there are open and are welcoming, and love it when people will listen to them.
"while my sweat drenched shirt stuck to my back as I pulled nails out of a ceiling on a rickety latter, I felt a shot of joy as the reality sunk in that this was the last day of gutting this summer! Later as I picked up tools at another location at 6pm I felt another moment of happiness knowing that for the summer this is it!"   -John Martindale
